The first two books I chose were relatively similar; so, I had to choose another book, which I had reread a few years ago to some of my kindergarten girls. The books were completely different, yet each had a lasting effect on readers, effects that have stayed with us for many years. Little Women is a classic. There is nothing that can compare to the values that this family novel embodies. If ever there was a brand for wholesome, effective, loving entertainment, it would be this book. I love reading it to girls when they are old enough to follow and appreciate the story. Lessons in spirituality, family bonds, and love are things that are often out of place in our society today, values that can quickly become distracted in our technological world and rush to take control of every emotion and movement we make. The fact that Mr. March is a member of the ministry and instills his beliefs into the very core of his family is phenomenal (Alcott, 1995). The way family continues to give, even in times of need, shows the true meaning of spirituality and proves that familial love can and does transcend bloodlines. This book spoke to me a lot because it reminds me that we need to remember our roots and that it's not what you have or don't have, but truly what we do with our lives. Compared to my other book, this one contained almost no violence. Of Mice and Men is another classic novel. Although on a different level, this book also shows us what family is and how the love of a family unit, whether large or small, blood or friendship, can save our lives (Stenibeck, 1965). The love that George and Lennie have for each other is tremendous, intensely thought about...centered on the card...challenged in a negative light. It did not prove that some people with mental problems are very intelligent in some areas. “Little Women” was, for me, completely positive, but it is one of my favorites. This is one of my “comfort” reads. If I were to take a step back and try to give it a negative look, I would say that, in a way, it could have shown life a little more realistically. However, during the time the story is set in, times were simple. Life was not a matter of “having” as it is now and people were not insensitive to their surroundings (Lasn, 2000). This novel is simply a good read, simple and pure. It's sad that in today's world there are no more stories like this for young people to read. We need to refocus our youth on the importance of family and the core values that they can sometimes only get from their family or community (Schaefer, 2011).
