The founding of the State of Israel was one of the greatest feats in modern Jewish history. However, with the founding of the state, a new nation was born. Because of this, there were many writings describing how the new Jews and the old Jews interacted with each other. Also, a lot of Zionist writings were written at the time, and people were writing about Ashkenazi and Mizrahi Jews. Each of these topics has a huge effect on our generation, because they fueled movements that sought to change the views of the Jewish people. In Moshe Shamir's The Tale of Dr. Schmidt we find many instances where the author talks about old and new Jews, Zionism, and how it bridges the gap between Ashkenazi and Mizeachi Jews. In The Tale of Dr. Schmidt, we find much symbolism that relates to the new Jew. First of all, the son Shalom represents the new Jew. We see this through Dr. Schmidt's stories about his son who became a soldier in the Israeli army (Shamir 153). For this reason we can say that he is a new Jew. However, there are times when Dr. Schmidt acts like an old Jew. We can see this, because she describes her son's uniform as "his pale forehead hidden under a stupid pointed hat" (Shamir 153). Since Dr. Schmidt calls him a silly hat, we can conclude that he doesn't take the military seriously. Furthermore one can also assume that Dr. Schmidt is not proud of his son's service, but thinks it is a waste of time. This shows that in this situation Dr. Schmidt thinks like an old Jew. Furthermore, the story talks about how the relationship between the son and his parents is not good. It could be due to all the fighting they had. one of the reasons for the fights could be because the new Jew and the old Jews have... middle of the paper... Shke Bezprozvani is a poor man, this is also just like the couple in Dr. Schmidt. Yemeni Jews must find a place in society so that they can contribute and start a better life for themselves. Israel was a very difficult place to live in when it was founded. We often found illnesses, which led many families to start over. For this reason, many authors expressed their feelings during this period. This can be seen in Dr. Schmidt's story. In this story it is clear that there are many old and new Jews, topics related to Zionism, and a divide between Ashkenazi Jews and Yemeni Jews. These topics helped readers relate to these stories and motivate them to live a better life. This is why the State of Israel has been so successful in its short life. The drive to succeed has shaped the State of Israel for the better.
