Topic > Open Source Databases in Higher Education: A Study

Ellucian is the student information system software used at Bergen Community College. Ellucian is connected to internal databases, such as; Student Planning, Moodle, Banner, Blackboard and SharePoint. While researching open source higher education databases I found five of the many open source databases available to higher education institutions. They are:1. Course 2.5, -OS2. Manhattan Virtual Classroom 2.1, -OS3. Moodle 1.1.1,-OS/WIN4. Blackboard 1.0.2-OS5. ATutor 1.3-OSOpen source software is an important component of higher education today. It's basically information sharing. Advances in the arts and sciences are the result of the open sharing of ideas, theories, studies and research. However, the software used on the computers of many school systems is closed and blocked, making educators partners in the suppression of critical information of this new age (Chauhan). Open source software development is occurring all over the world, where part of the community develops individual modules, it becomes necessary to establish common standards and definitions for open source software. These standards are established to define the interaction between modules to ensure software interoperability. Software components that follow specific open standards can be replaced with other products that comply with the standard, which allows the user greater freedom to choose the component that best suits his needs and is not tied to a particular product, as with commercial software ( Chauhan). One element of open source databases is the use of data sharing of student information. Common characteristics used by databases are their UNIX or Windows operating systems, as well as the MYSQL database. The database used is... half of the paper... to report what I associate with obtaining a low qualification. Perhaps these students have dropped out? I noticed that the cost of attending two of the colleges that had higher tuition rates were, Eastwick College in Nutley and Eastwick College in Hackensack, were both in the low twenty thousand range compared to Bergen at $13,006. These numbers are based on the two-year enrollment rate. In summary, to obtain this type of data, open source databases are an important component in compiling these statistics. In Ellucian's example, Bergen's student information system is connected to internal databases such as SharePoint and Moodle that pull information from registration, finances and student services, to name a few. Sharing information via open source databases is what allowed me to perform peer analysis with efficiency and data security.
