The period of the Enlightenment, also known as The Age of Reason, was a time of social, religious and political revolution throughout the 18th century that changed man's thoughts during this period of "awakening". It was a liberation of ignorant thoughts, ideas and actions that had become detached from the ignorant perception of how society should be maintained and obeyed, thus giving little room for new ideas about the world. The Puritan society believed that these new ideas of thought were extremely radical compared to what they believed, which was a belief of strong religion and rational morality. The enlightened society believed that the use of reason would be a catalyst for social change and had a demand for political representation, thus giving rise to a historical moment where individualism was widely accepted in the new world. The Puritan society strongly believed in myth, magic and religious superstitions which were immensely used by the Puritans before democracy, capitalism and the scientific revolution gave rise starting from the Enlightenment period. Writing was a tenet of social philosophy that both eras conflicted with due to differences in how and what they wrote. In "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by John Edwards, he wrote and instilled fear in those who were thinking of turning away from the Puritan teachings by saying that God will have wrath towards those who do not glorify him, which caused some Puritans to return to the old teachings rather than to new ideas of religion. In contrast, in the writings of Enlight...... middle of paper ......n, the progression of these three philosophies from Puritan theological visions to the great scientific and rational ideals of the Enlightenment showed how a reform of the beliefs and ideas led to the progressively modern ethos on which our government is based today. The world's scientific reasoning sparked ideas that the ignorant Puritan society was immensely closed-minded about, which gave way to how we explain how things happen through the use of science and reasoning. Although the Puritans saw this great reform as blasphemy against God, the Enlightenment expanded several religious beliefs that fostered intellect and understanding of religion in societies. The social awakening of the arts helps pave the way for today's entertainment, and if it weren't for this great "awakening" of knowledge, our society would be far less advanced than we are today..
