Topic > Progeria Cause and Effect Essay - 829

Progeria is a rare disease that affects children in the first decade of life and causes an unusual phenotype that resembles aging in many ways (Glynn and Glover, 2005). It is premature aging, from the phenotypic point of view, from the point of view of appearance and, from the genotypic point of view, of the genetic makeup. Although an infant with this disease may appear normal at first, symptoms do not appear until after the first year of life. Every year one in four to eight million newborns is affected by this disease. Victims of progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, suffer from chronic and life-shortening illnesses and must be continuously monitored at the discretion of the doctor. Medical scientists have done extensive research on this topic and it is becoming less and less of a medical mystery. The reasons behind the cause of progeria, its treatment and the progress in finding a cure are all underway for better understanding by humanity. Body Paragraphs Aging is a natural life process that occurs after puberty (normally). It occurs when disorder increases between the interactions of molecules in the body. When cell death and damage exceed the amount of cell repair and renewal, aging occurs, making the aging population more susceptible to disease and death. It is harmful because this can cause the buildup of waste products and possibly interfere with the immune system and/or metabolism. Everything that happens to us is basically the accumulation of changes over time (Leonard Hayflick, 2007). Humans have a limited lifespan, an internal system and an external protective system (i.e. skin and bacteria), and produce carbon dioxide. When they begin to deteriorate, they weaken, they slow down, they have a destructive biological function... half of the paper... they are bad for the nuclear envelope as this causes destruction within the cell and an unstable nucleus; this is the reverse reaction of progeria. This ends up causing the progeria gene not to attach to the nucleus, causing the nucleus to remain in its normal state (Glover and Glynn 2005). Conclusion Overall, progeria is a life-shortening disease caused by premature aging. Patients with this disease do not live long, usually until the age of thirteen, and suffer from chronic diseases associated with progeria. Unfortunately, there is no fully effective cure, but there are several treatments that help progeria patients live a less difficult life. Progress towards finding a cure is getting closer, as the pathogen of the disease has been discovered. There are great hopes for progeria patients and they should live their lives to the fullest!
