Capital punishment goes against almost all religions. Isolated passages of religious scripture have been cited in support of the death penalty, and nearly all religious groups in the United States consider executions immoral. There is no credible evidence that capital punishment deters crime from America's streets. Scientific studies have failed to demonstrate that executions deter people from committing crimes more than long prison sentences. Additionally, states without the death penalty have much lower murder rates. Executions are carried out at staggering costs to taxpayers. Funds spent on executions should be used to address the problem of killings and find solutions to help communities unite to demonstrate a more peaceful environment. CNN recently reported how studies have found that criminal litigation over the death penalty costs taxpayers far more than seeking life without parole. (CNN, 2015) States spend millions of dollars to lock up death row inmates, when the funds could be used to help society become more positive and provide help to those who need it.
