DiabetesOur modern life is full of illnesses and diseases. Each disorder has its main causes, its effects on our body and its treatment. Most of these diseases have been present in our world for a long time. However, our lifestyles, with inorganic food, stress and bad habits, have helped these diseases develop and spread faster than before. One of these diseases is diabetes. Diabetes can be defined as a metabolic disease in which the body's inability to produce sufficient insulin causes high blood glucose levels. It can lead to many other diseases such as heart disease, hypertension and blindness. Although most of these diseases occur after having diabetes for a long time, the change in glucose levels in the body can cause coma or even death (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia). There are 25.8 million children and adults in the United States living with diabetes, representing 8.3% of the population according to the American Diabetes Association. Diabetes has many types. However, we can divide them into three different categories: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and other types of diabetes. These three types have similar symptoms such as frequent urination, weight loss, and vision changes (Judd). However, each type differs from the other in the types of people it infects, the factors that cause it, and the way it can be treated. Type 1 diabetes is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes. It happens when the pancreas releases less than the correct amount of insulin, which causes changes in blood sugar levels. The pancreas' ability to deliver insulin continues to decline until it stops. At that point people who have this type of diabetes can... middle of paper....... However, its complications can be reduced through proper awareness and timely treatment. Three main complications are related to blindness, kidney damage and heart attack. It is important to closely monitor patients' blood glucose levels to avoid complications. One of the difficulties with tightly controlling blood glucose levels is that such attempts can lead to hypoglycemia which creates much more serious complications than an increase in blood glucose levels. Researchers are now looking for alternative methods for treating diabetes. The goal of this article is to give a general idea of the three main categories of diabetes, talk about its causes and how it can be treated. I certainly believe that diabetes is one of the most challenging research topics of the new century and I want to encourage new researchers to take on the challenges.
