In 1872 in the world of American architecture two great architects formed a partnership that would soon be seen as one of the greatest couples on the East Coast. The architect's names were Daniel H. Burnham and John Wellborn Root. John Root graduated from New York University with a degree in civil engineering, that being said, he spent the next two years bouncing between different offices in New York and Chicago. Daniel Burnham instead studied at the New Church School located in Massachusetts; after graduation he went to work for William Le Baron Jenney, in Chicago, for a short time. At that point both architects weren't having much luck keeping jobs. Both were unsuccessful when they eventually got jobs as draftsmen for Carter, Drake and Wright Architects in Chicago (Burnham and Root, 1994). Desperate to prove themselves, Burnham and Root decided to work together and join forces as a partnership for several projects. Between their two very different personalities they discovered that they could solve almost any problem, design and produce a great building. The collaboration of Daniel Burnham and John Root was made successful by their contrasting personalities and primary focuses of each project, and by their similar influences that entered into the designs of the Rookery Building, the Monadnock Building, the Reliance Building, and the Masonic Temple. Daniel Burnham and John Root had an unusual relationship, the only thing they had in common was a love of architecture. But their architectural style was also so different that they both found importance in opposing concepts within the buildings they enjoyed. Burnham was a practical man. Burnham was mostly in the middle of the paper......people coming in and seeing the large open space and looking at the glass and iron structure above (Schaffer, 2003).Daniel Burnham and John I Root were two East Coast architects, but above all famous for Chicago skyscrapers. They designed many buildings that still exist today, not only in Chicago, but throughout the United States. The most memorable buildings are the Rookery Building, the Monadnock Building, the Reliance Building, and the Masonic Temple, all in Chicago. Thanks to the different personalities and architectural styles of Burnham and Root, they managed to become successful American architects, even after failures early in their careers. Having two very different strengths as a team, worked out in their favor, a strong customer base, good facilities and aesthetically pleasing buildings was ultimately their end product for each project.
