Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The pursuit of truth does not permit violence on one's adversary.” Karamchand Gandhi lived from October 2, 1869 to January 30, 1948. When Gandhi was young, "Mohandas Gandhi was shy, soft-spoken and only a mediocre student in school." He got an arranged marriage at the age of 13 with Kasturba and had four children. Gandhi's wife Kasturba supported him until his death in 1944 (Rosenberg Para 2). Gandhi is considered the national father of India, also known as “bapu”. He spent 20 years in South Africa fighting for Indian rights. He always lived a simplistic lifestyle and dressed culturally (paragraph 1). Gandhi's independence struggle for India, his teachings of non-violence and “Satyagraha” (truth), and his good deeds made him a Mahatma (great soul), which proves that Mohandas .K. Gandhi lived an important life. Mohandas K. Gandhi was an independent leader for India. In 1932, the British separated the "untouchables" from the upper class Hindus, similar to an earlier incident with Muslims. Seeing this segregation Gandhi fought and sacrificed his life by fasting (“Mahatma Gandhi” Para 22). Gandhi gave rights to the untouchables by giving them the name “harijan”. He opposed the British because of separate electors (“Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi” paragraph 17). He fought against the English for the Salt March. In 1930 the British taxed the salt used by the Indians. Gandhi and thousands of other protestors walked 241 miles to the sea where Gandhi gathered salt into his hands and broke the unjust salt tax rule (paragraph 15). After the salt march, Gandhi decided to fast and received an image of a holy man (Rosenberg Para 37). Gandhi had made many works which showed his spirit through… paper… his teachings, and his good deeds for people made him a mahatma. All the good deeds and inspiration of Gandhi show that Gandhi lived a life accordingly. Gandhi's most important movement was the struggle for the independence of the untouchables and against the British (“Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi” paragraph 17). Gandhi's biggest protest was the Salt March (paragraph 17). Throughout the independence movement Gandhi fought for nonviolence and truth (“Mahatma Gandhi” paragraph 12). Gandhi's good deeds made him a mahatma (“Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi” paragraph 9). Gandhi inspired many leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. with the concept of non-violence (Rosenberg Para 1). Gandhi had done many good things in his lifetime that still inspire people today. All the aspects accomplished by Gandhi made him a great soul or hero, which shows that Mahatma Gandhi lived an important life..
