Imperfection, manipulation, and ignorance are the perfect ingredients to create a tragic hero. A great example of a person who displays these traits would be none other than Othello, from William Shakespeare's play “Othello”. Throughout the play, Othello is manipulated and as a result becomes extremely jealous and angry at those he loves. Othello is easily manipulated by the conversations between himself and Iago. Othello's tragedy is caused by personal flaws and a mistaken trust in others, which is evident in his dialect, and behaviors change throughout the play. Othello's flaws and insecurities; jealousy, anger, insecurities and misplaced trust in others contribute to his tragic downfall. Othello begins to doubt his love for Desdemona due to Iago's influence. “O curse of marriage, / That we may call these delicate creatures our own / And not their appetites! I would rather be a toad / And live off the steam of a prison / Than keep a corner in the thing I love for the uses of others. (III.iii.270-75) Othello declares that he would rather be a loathsome creature than love his wife Desdemona whom he believes is no longer faithful. Othello is uncertain about his love for Desdemona and her love for him, but he does not confront her about the situation. Othello's suspicions and jealousy lead him to misinterpret situations “It's not words that shake me like this. Pish!/ Noses, ears and lips. Isn't it possible? Confess? / Handkerchief? O devil” (IV.i.41-43). Othello gets angry at Desdemona because she has lost the handkerchief he had given her. As a result, Othello now believes that he loves someone else. Overall, Othello's tragedy is caused by his own shortcomings and wrong trust in "Othello". others that are obvious such as his dialect and behavior changing throughout the show.
