Imagine a person walking through an art gallery displaying pieces from the Mayan, Aztec and Inca cultures. Would one be able to distinguish which piece comes from which culture? There are many similarities in these cultures when it comes to art, architecture and lifestyle. These three cultures make up part of what was Mesoamerica. Although they share many similarities, each culture is unique in its own way. However, it is clear that they influenced each other. This article provides an insight into how the arts of these cultures are strikingly similar yet different in their own ways. The Mayan civilizationThis was the first civilization of Mesoamerica. It was developed by the Mayan people between 800 BC and 900 AD (Maya Art History, 2016). The Mayan civilization is widely recognized for its development of a comprehensive writing system known as hieroglyphic writing and for the development of notable systems of astronomy, architecture, art, mathematics, and calendar. The Inca used stone blocks to create major structures without joining the stone blocks with mortar. . These stones were carved to fit together perfectly (Inca Art History, 2016). The final structures were stable thanks to the perfect adhesion of the stones. Machu Picchu is a notable living example of Inca architecture (Inca Art History, 2016). Inca architecture was very different from Mayan architecture. The Mayans mainly used limestone for the construction of their buildings while the Incas used other types of stones. One of the main distinguishing factors of Inca construction is that no form of paste or mortar was ever used to join the blocks (Inca Art History, 2016).
