I participated in data collection and community health-based surveys in rural Nairobi, traveling from house to house talking to people about health education, hygiene and of sanitation, the importance of vaccinations and benefits of seeking early treatment. I also volunteered at various medical camps in underserved rural areas, attended seminars, and met with public health leaders at various events. My interpersonal skills have allowed me to become an effective communicator and have taught me how to foster lasting relationships between doctor and patient. These experiences allowed me to work with patients from different contexts and helped me appreciate the severity and complexity of healthcare problems, confirming my growing interest in preventive medicine and primary care, thus laying the foundation for my career in public health. I wish to use the evidence gained through research and the quantitative skills gained from epidemiology and biostatistics to develop and implement effective public health policies that benefit the less privileged and deserving
