I recently went out to dinner with a good friend of mine who changed her eating habits when she became a student at Penn-State and is now a devout vegetarian. As an unrepentant meat eater, eating next to a vegetarian was a little uncomfortable, so to start a conversation, I asked her, “Why did you become a vegetarian?” and like most vegetarians I know who attend Penn State, he says it was because he knew how animals were processed in an animal science class. A follow-up question I asked her was, “Do you still like the taste of meat?” and surprisingly she replied: “yes”. Coming from Jamaica, my childhood was a bit unique and different from other kids, I killed chickens, goats and pigs when I was young and thought little about it. Hearing that someone would become a vegetarian because they saw a chicken's head cut off inhumanely just reminds me of how I was the person who cut off the heads of those delicious chickens. It's not just her who changed her eating habits once she got to Penn State, many college freshmen change their eating habits for the same reason. There are "vegetarians" out there who don't eat meat for reasons I completely understand and approve of. . For example, practicing Muslims and Jews do not eat pork for biblical reasons. Another reason a person may not eat meat is because of food allergies; where eating meat makes you sick and gives you hives. These are the reasons I respect and approve even if I love meat. However, when the reason you don't eat meat is because you're afraid of the way the animal died, I find that to be a problem and a reason not to be sympathetic. Eating meat is healthy, we've been eating meat for thousands of years, our digestive... it's paper... we've been eating it for thousands of years, so why stop now? Just because you came to Penn State doesn't mean you have to be converted into a herbivore because an animal science class took you to a slaughterhouse and scared you.
