Topic > The Importance of the Cuban Embargo - 765

This embargo ultimately harms the Cuban people more than the government. The United States has all the resources Cuba needs, but cannot access them. This embargo is punishing the wrong people. Being deprived of basic necessities such as medicine, food and technology is inhumane and should not be taken away from them. For this reason the embargo must end. The United States simply does not fully follow the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human beings are born with certain basic rights, benefits, and protections. They are inalienable and cannot be taken away or abandoned. The United States does not guarantee the rights of Cubans and their families. They are not guaranteed the right to travel and are restricted from even visiting Cuban-American families. They also don't have adequate food, medicine and security, which is partly the fault of the United States due to all the restrictions imposed by the embargo. There are many anti-embargo groups because people feel that the United States is not fair. The embargo is creating hatred towards America among the Cuban population. Fidel Castro even managed to convince the citizens of Cuba to favor him by making it appear that the United States was the cause of their economic depression. This means that he did not take responsibility for his failing country. Not only are Cubans becoming against the embargo, but so are countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Even Florida and other US states do not agree with these sanctions imposed on Cuba. People believe that they are illegal and useless now because the embargo clearly did not work and is not working. More than fifty years have passed since President Kennedy established an… unusable means of paper for a peaceful transition to democratic government” (1). The United States should work to end this embargo and promote Cuba's peaceful transition. Finally, the embargo on Cuba should be ended. This policy has failed for more than fifty years and has yet to produce positive change in Cuba. The embargo has harmed the Cuban people more than the leaders who govern the country. Cubans suffer because they don't have the resources to live comfortably and it's not fair to them. This embargo is also putting a strain on our economy because we are not taking advantage of cheap imports. We are also losing money because we are unable to export to them. This embargo is becoming a failure. It's time to see some change instead of waiting many more years to see if Cuba will convert to a democracy; therefore, the United States should end the embargo on Cuba.
