William Blake is a poet best known for the engravings that accompany his works of poetry. These engravings included in the poems help describe the meaning of the poems. However, sometimes the engravings he includes in his poetry can lead to complications for the interpreter of the poem. There are many variations of the same engraving that accompany a poem, all original; some of these engravings complete the poem, while others complicate it. An example of this occurrence, where one engraving can complement the poem and the other complicate it, is in William Blake's work “The Echoing Green” which can be found in Blake's Songs of Innocence. The important thing to recognize is that regardless of whether the poem is further complicated or simplified because of the image, the poem and its accompanying image still evoke thought and discussion on the part of the reader. The second is that depending on which engraving the poem was being read, their interpretations of the poem will be different. These differences are caused by the fact that the engravings have a great influence on what is extracted from the poem and how it is interpreted. It is unknown whether Blake did this on purpose or not, however one can appreciate that the variety within this poem allows for many different interpretations and support for those different interpretations. Whether the engraving is complementing or complicating the poem does not matter, the important part is the fact that the poem and the engraving together evoke multiple emotions from the audience and create more thoughts than they would alone..
