I firmly believe that the environment has a profound effect on individuals. The reality of life is that we cannot always control our environment, but there are times in life when we find ourselves fixing the path to different destinations, the choice of which is in our hands. As people we must choose to make the best of environments that are not conducive to the best for our lives. Choosing to be strong and drawing positivity from adverse circumstances is a way to survive. However, when we can control or create the environments that influence us, we must shape them into environments that promote egalitarian lifestyles; this is how we thrive and cultivate a better world for ourselves and others. The ideology of equality and anti-misogyny should be part of a feminist/feminist/humanist lifestyle first and foremost to create a change, an eventual movement. The world today is run by overly powerful systems, systems that include patriarchy, hierarchy and capitalism. These systems of domination are beyond the control of one person or a class of students, we cannot simply press the stop button on this monumental machine, “we are far outmatched by our adversaries” (Hooks, 165). What can be done is to eliminate these machines from our homes and our favorite environments. These forms of domination do not necessarily have to reproduce themselves in the places where we dwell and spend the breadth of our lives. Bell Hooks states that, however, this often happens, that forms of sexist domination are practiced within the family. This, as well as other demeaning practices, is an issue that must be addressed to change both men's and women's understanding and interaction with the outside world (Hooks, 37). Progressive actions must be taken within a paper world, honing the power of these forces for the good of all. Bell Hooks suggests a cultural transformation and I agree, I believe this transformation must originate in the cultures of our more diurnal environments and contexts. We must not be afraid of being politically incorrect, in the sense that we will talk about issues, we will affirm our awareness of topics that affect the quality of our lives as human beings. In our homes, our businesses, our workplaces, our classrooms and our neighborhoods, we stand up for what is right, we speak up for what is right, we show others that our actions are right by living the ideologies and discourse they believe in feminists, womanizers and humanists. the power of the domino effect for collective change, leads others to do the same. Make nonconformity the new social norm among your peers. Transforming environments.
