Thesis Statement: While ancient Greek historians made great strides in perfecting the writing of history, Roman historians (and the Greek historian who wrote Roman history) continued to perfect the art of writing good history The two Greeks Herodotus and Thucydides began the practice of placing truth and personal knowledge of historical events above prose and poetry (compared to Homer), as well as removing much of the theological-centric content. Roman historians who came later improved on this practice, notably Tacitus, who used the better developed record keeping of the time to write more concise and accurate histories with personal knowledge of the movers and shakers of the kingdom, both the senate and the emperors . Tacitus's style of writing history more closely resembles the ideal of what a historian should be, in terms of quality, accuracy, and freedom of idealism or personal inclination. The two Greeks who wrote primarily about Greece, Herodotus and Thucydides, were predominantly writers who dealt primarily with wars and the data on the lives of Greeks and combatants during the time of war. Herodotus is considered the father of history, while Thucydides in turn is believed to have modified his writing method to more rigorous standards of accuracy. Herodotus, of Halicarnassus (a city in what is now modern Turkey, then a city in the Greek province of Caria), wrote about the origins and customs of the people, cities, regions, constitutions, politics of Egypt, Arabia and India, Scythia, Libya and Thrace (Breisach 2007). His writing style is best described as that of a self-styled historian, convinced of his importance and knowledge, sure to insert his personal perspective wherever he deems it necessary so that you learn...... middle of paper. ... ..e&q&f=false (accessed 04 04, 2014).Breisach, Ernst.
