The perception of sexual activity in African culture is viewed negatively due to Western views of Americans. How can one judge the basis of someone else's culture? What is considered morally right or wrong for them may go against everything Africans have ever believed. Acceptable sexual attitudes and behaviors are a direct correlation of norms within the culture. According to Lawoyin and Kanthula (2010) unsafe sexual behaviors are the norm in South Africa. There is an awareness of some risk factors such as unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases, but traditions largely contribute to the unhealthy decisions made by both men and women. Although Americans perceive such behaviors negatively, understanding the context of cultures and traditions (Lawoyin and Kanthula, 2010) is harmful before placing blame on the individual. Risky sex is described as having more than one sexual relationship with more than the primary one.
