Society would like to believe that prejudice and racism do not exist in our country. It would be an atrocity for other countries to see America not create others in the same way. Unfortunately it exists, it was there when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. After the storm, people are horrified by images of people struggling to survive and living in severely deplorable conditions. How could these atrocities occur and why did they occur? Harris and Carbado stated that “the most relevant and dominant framework is color blindness, or the belief that race is not a factor in how we make sense of the world” (Harris, Carbado 528). America ignores that racism exists, so when tragedies occur even the most vulnerable are ignored. So since the citizens of New Orleans were priced out, it essentially became their fault that they were in that situation because of their own actions, not anyone else's. This color blindness that Harris and Carbado talk about also exists when it comes to America's highest honor, being president. The hope that was alive when Barack Obama first became president is a forgotten thought. At the beginning of his campaign, Obama sided with the underdogs in American society. He wanted to work to improve the lives of minorities and the poor.
