Topic > video game censorship - 1267

The first video game systems were created in 1972. From then on, people started creating new systems and new games to play on these systems. Video games didn't become popular until the 1980s, when they appeared in malls and other popular locations and were "generating $2 billion in quarterly revenue" ("Making"). This is also about the same year that video games became popular on personal computers by game developers making their arcade version of their game available for personal computers. After several years of video game development and with the advancement of technology, video game graphics have improved. And with these improved graphics, video games looked more violent as they showed things like blood and people's arms being blown off by guns. This started to scare the parents. These scared parents have begun to assume that these types of video games will corrupt their children's delicate minds and inspire their children to try to imitate the violent video games they play. So these concerned parents turned to the government to try to get a ban on violent video games. Because of this, video games now have to have ratings on their games and show why they are rated like movies are today. In 2005, the governor of California “signed Assembly Bill 1179 restricting minors' access to violent video games.” ("Previous"). However, video games should not be censored because game developers should have the right to show what they want in their video game and not be forced to hide it due to parents' inability to control what games their children play. Parents have come up with many ideas about how these violent video games affect their children. They think that children are very gullible and have... middle of paper... that players don't do any physical exercise. Since video games are addictive, players will play for hours and hours without a break or moving from one spot. Violent video games have been the subject of enormous controversy since they became popular in the 1980s. Even though these games can be very cruel, they are not the reason why violent and disturbed children are the way they are. Violent video games are as violent as some comics, television shows, and movies. Violent video games will continue to be made because they are the best-selling entertainment in the world. Imagine that video games were created when football was created. Now imagine that football has just been invented, a violent game that causes physical harm and has caused hundreds of thousands of injuries and even many deaths. Which will now get the support of worried parents?
