In summary, each character uses the news as justification for treating Troy with the aggression and disrespect with which he has treated them for almost eighteen years. Cory resolves the news by discovering his own strength and personal identity. Rose resolves the news by breaking off their relationship and taking care of Raynell because she sees him as morally correct (and not because Troy wanted it). The story of “Fences” is very complex and exemplifies many different types of relationships. From an audience perspective, it sends a very strong message and can relate to many different types of people. If anyone needed to consult their moral compass and find a mother's love, they would look to Rose. If a person was looking for a dream and needed to resist obstacles, he could look to Cory. If a particular audience member was prone to bad attitudes and sinful temptations, he or she could identify with Troy and be warned by her story. There is a little initiative to be a better person for everyone in this play.
