Topic > Violence in the movie Precious - 917

I sat down with my wife Marina and brother-in-law Anthony to watch this movie. While watching the movie I noticed my wife's reaction when she saw graphic scenes such as Precious being raped by her father and her mother throwing her newborn baby to the ground. He became angry that parents could be so cruel to their children. My wife couldn't believe that a mother couldn't show any affection to her daughter. He thought the violence was inhumane and merciless. Her reaction is based on her personal experience, she is a mother of two children and had experiences of violence when she was a child. She liked the film because she wants to become a social worker and it shows all the components that a child abuse case goes through. The social worker interviews both the mother and daughter to determine whether Precious is experiencing the abuse, and social workers conduct home visits to determine the child's well-being. Anthony thought the film was pointless. He didn't understand the purpose of the film. He laughed at the scene where Precious was beaten down by her mother and the bullies in her neighborhood. He teased her when she entered the restaurant to steal a bucket of chicken, calling her fat. He condemned the violence, stating that no one should be raped or abused by their parents, but he did not like the film. Our judgment is different because of our knowledge regarding violence. My wife is a college student majoring in social work. He has a clear understanding of what violence includes from the classes he has taken. Anthony is a sixteen year old attending high school. He is immature and lacks knowledge regarding family matters
