The Battle of the Greenbrier River or Battle of Camp Bartow took place on October 2-3, 1861. The skirmish took place near the base of Cheat Mountain in what is now Pocahontas County, western Virginia . The operation will last from June to December to be completed. General Reynolds thought that if he could get rid of Camp Bartow he could easily reach the Virginia counties on the other side of the mountains to the east. Brigadier General Joseph Reynolds was the Union commander while Brigadier General Henry R. Jackson was the Confederate commander. Reynolds had about 5000 men of various arms. His main force included the 24th, 25th, and 32nd Ohio Infantry, 7th, 9th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th Indiana Infantry, 4th U.S. Artillery, and many others. General Jackson had about 2,000 men. He had reported that his army was down to a third of its strength due to diseases and illnesses that spread easily in the harsh camp conditions. His main force included the 1st and 12th Georgia Infantry, the 23rd and 44th, and a battalion of the 25th Virginia Infantry, the 3rd Arkansas Infantry, and the 31st Virginia Infantry and a couple of others. Despite the heavy gunfire and spiritual fighting, casualties were extremely low. The Union actually had 8 men killed and 35 wounded. Some reports say a man had his arm amputated and took the knife and cut the tendons still connected. The Confederates had lost six men, had 33 wounded, and 13 men were missing in action. It was later discovered that the 13 missing had been taken prisoner by General Reynolds. The Union attacked about eight in the morning and drove back the pickets, driving them back with rifle fire. The Confederates were so armed that they received one shot for every four Union shots. General Rey... center of card... I've lived in the same place for generations, annual re-enactments. They use the original muzzle loading style and cannons in specific areas so people can see them from a safe distance, take notes and not get hurt.
