Plagiarism and EthicsWhat is plagiarism?Plagiarism is taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as your own. For example, when you copy and paste other articles, quotes, works you found on the Internet for homework, projects, anything like that that is plagiarizing since you didn't put any of your own words or work in writing. This also doesn't mean you can just copy, paste, and make changes to make it look different or your own because you're technically still plagiarizing. The information/research you get from the websites you read from should help you by giving you your own ideas for creating your own articles, essays, etc. So by now you should know that it is also illegal to plagiarize and it has its consequences. What do you consider cheating? Even cheating for me is a form of plagiarism. It means taking advantage of someone else's work to unfairly use it to your own advantage. For example, you can cheat when you copy others in school/class for homework, tests, essays and anything that is turned in for a grade without you doing the work that was written is considered cheating because you are getting a grade on something not you worked or were busy. You didn't work for the grade so you don't deserve it, so you cheated and in the end you really gain nothing because you didn't learn from the task assigned to you. What are the consequences at Butler? High school for cheating? The consequences of cheating at Butler High School would be suspension, and if repeated multiple times, it could even be expulsion. The days of suspension may vary depending on the severity of the cheating or plagiarism. If you did it on an important piece of paper......lazy person for those who know you and "your" work that isn't really yours. This will also be in your school records which will stay there forever and colleges will be able to see it and most likely will not want to accept you into their schools. If you can't get accepted into a college, how can you get a good career/profession? That little plagiarism you did in high school could affect you and your life for a long time. You wouldn't have thought that a little and simple copy and paste would affect you so much but in reality it does, precisely because it is unethical. There are always consequences for unethical actions. Then there are also legal effects/consequences that you will have to face because plagiarism is not legal, you could end up in a lot of trouble and charges of fraud or copyright infringement. What websites can you use to check your papers for plagiarism??
