CleopatraCleopatra VII was known for the love she had for her country, a love so great that she would go to any lengths necessary for the good of it. She was born into a Macedonian family that had power and dominion over Egypt. They were descended from Ptolemy I, general of Alexander the Great who became king of Egypt after Alexander's death in 323 BC "The Ptolemaic dynasty was intertwined in good and ill will with the other Hellenistic states that had been carved out of parts of Alexander's empire " (Huzar, 187). In this article I will discuss who he was and the measures he would take for the good of his country. Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC in Egypt. His father was the Egyptian pharaoh, Ptolemy XII, nicknamed Auletes or "flute player". Cleopatra's mother was probably Auletes' sister, Cleopatra V Tryphaena. He had two older sisters, Cleopatra VI and Berenice IV. She also had a younger sister, Arsinole IV. There were also two younger brothers, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. When his father died in 51 BC, he left the government of the kingdom to Cleopatra VII and her younger brother Ptolemy XIV. She married him, a twelve year old. This was not out of love for him, but out of wanting to rule. In order to rule she must have a spouse, brother or son. Cleopatra is one of the most discussed figures in ancient history. “He held many titles. Among them was Thea Neotera, the New Goddess, an echo of the earlier great Cleopatra Thea; and Philadelphus, lover of his brothers. Other titles include Philopator, lover of the father, and Philopatris, lover of the country. " (Grant1, 198). Some said she was beautiful and irresistible. When portrayed in the film she is ravishingly beautiful. Others argue that her beauty was internal rather than external; that it was not her looks that attracted the great men of the her time, but her intellect and personality. She was an educated woman who spoke several languages, knew geography, and spoke about politics. This was rare at the time, because not many women could do so "Cleopatra formed a powerful plan for revive the great Ptolemaic Empire of the past by maintaining ties with two later leaders, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, both of whom in turn became her lovers." (Grant, 17).
