Smoking cigarettes is common among most adults in the United States, but it is one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. Many people believe that smoking should be made illegal. The reason they might feel this way is because it is very harmful to your health and can lead to death. I absolutely agree that cigarettes should be banned from sale and production because to me they are considered a dangerous drug. The first reason to support my claim that cigarette smoking should be banned is that it is a "leading cause of premature and preventable deaths." ,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The evidence to support this reason is that approximately 443,000 cigarette deaths occur each year in the United States alone. However, some may dispute this evidence because Mercado2 deaths are caused by users choosing to smoke. Opponents say smokers have the right to smoke and argue that people around smokers receive secondhand smoke and sometimes become seriously ill. On the one hand it is true that people can choose whether to smoke or not. However, if they start smoking, it is a very difficult habit to break due to nicotine, which is an addictive substance. Another reason for calling for a ban on cigarette smoking is the cost to society and the financial burden on the families of smokers. The evidence that supports this reason is that nearly $193 billion is spent on smoking each year. $97 billion in lost production and $96 billion in healthcare costs. (Chew, Norma) This evidence shows that people are sending too much money for cigarettes and hospital costs. Many smokers get lung cancer or some kind of disease.
