GLOBAL ESSAY 9ON MEDIEVAL TIMES WAS THE TIME PERIOD BETWEEN 400 AD AND 1400 AD A DARK AGE FOR EUROPE? WAS THIS A CULTURAL DECAY AND DECLINE? The Middle Ages for Europe, from 400 AD to 1400 AD, are often labeled “The Dark Ages”. This time period began after a turning point known as the Fall of Rome. It caused the division of Rome into two well-known civilizations: medieval Europe, Islam and the Byzantine Empire. Furthermore, medieval Europe led to a well-known utopian period of “rebirth” identified as the Renaissance. The period between 400 AD and 1400 AD was not a "dark age" for Europe due to the advancement in academic success, flourishing of architecture, and religious unity along with government. This was not a cultural decay or decline because of the storied time period it led to. Europe had a good economy at some point in its history, according to The Development of Early Civilizations written in Document B, "From 1000 to 1300, the European economy developed and prospered. Available agricultural land tripled and the food availability increased significantly, causing the population to increase” (Document B). During this period, some problems were present, but according to Document B, economic failure was not one of them land available in that period. But that's not all, not only has the economy developed, but also the education system has taken a big step towards the future. According to Document E entitled The Rise of Universities, “Starting from the beginning of the 11th century, universities were founded throughout Europe”, to this day many students around the world attend universities. It is very common today in Europe. At that time monks were educated in these universities but as time went by they began to pre...... middle of paper ...... “…let them lose their business, or be stripped or beaten publicly in the presence of people”, the laws were taken very seriously and had consequences on them . The people feared and followed all laws (Document D). The period between 400 AD and 1400 AD was not a "Dark Ages" for Europe due to the advancement in academic success, flourishing of architecture and religious unity along with improvements in government. . This period was not a decay or decline because it did not become extinct but transmitted its discoveries and interpretations of the world. It may not have been the “best” time in European history, but it certainly wasn't as dark and terrible as we believe. If it declined or decayed, there would be a different civilization on that earth today. Medieval Europe should not be labeled “dark” because it had important and refined aspects that made it simply “Medieval Europe”.”.
