Albert Einstein once said, “It has become frighteningly obvious that our technology has surpassed our humanity.” Technology is a controversial topic, some say we are overly dependent on gadgets and devices. However, if it weren't for technology we wouldn't be able to get many benefits. Life in the modern world is difficult today because technology has taken up much of our time. It can make us feel alone and disconnect from reality. Because we spend a lot of time on the Internet, such as browsing the web or using instant messaging, we lack our social skills because we don't know how to interact with people. People who are “socially anxious” and “lonely” tend to focus more on the Internet creating “relationships with others” and slowly interact with people on the web but do not socialize with people in our lives (Tyler 200-201) Some may argue that technology helps us not feel alone because it is the way to escape reality for a while and the Internet can reconnect us with our friends and family from all over the world. We can save time by “shopping” online and communicating quickly via “email rather than snail mail” (Franzen 428). We can also communicate via webcam, especially for university students far from family. It's a way to reconnect with our loved ones and stay in touch with our friends. We want to be “able to share our lives with others” and technology “allows us to do this with music, video, images, and text” (Arnett 477-479). I normally use technology like listening to music to make the time pass faster. Since I travel a lot, I usually use my phone and play Fruit Ninja, Spell Tower and Jet Pack. These games are the first three I play while traveling or going somewhere in Los Angeles with my family. I Reading is my... medium of paper......used by technology to inform us that something is happening. Technology means a lot in the deaf community. Technology will always be a debated topic, is it so impersonal that it makes us feel alone? Or are its benefits so great that we prefer to benefit from it despite feeling alone? The fact is that technology has improved the quality of life of many groups such as the deaf community. So, right or wrong, it helped us a lot. Works Cited Arnett, Jeffrey J. "Loneliness."
