When you're a senior in high school, your main goals are to finish your college applications and if you're a girl, of course prom, you don't realize that you are a year away from entering college and the world of “rape culture.” Rape culture is said to exist because we don't believe it exists. Rape culture is defined as “an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture.” We already have the idea that at universities where sports are glorified some professors will let athletes get away with numerous things, from cheating to missing numerous classes, but fraternity events can be high risk for rape. First I'll summarize "Forities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Space. Then I will use information from my criminology course to better define violent crime. Finally, I will explain that campus rape is not a cultural component. Colleges should hold clubs like fraternities and sports to the same standard as others and be severely punished for the crimes they commit so they no longer feel superior and think they can get away with rape. "Some have argued that fraternities are places where rape is likely to occur on college campuses and that students who are more likely to accept insults and be sexually aggressive are more likely to live in fraternities and sororities, consume higher doses high levels of alcohol and drugs and place a greater value on social life in college,” according to the article “Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?” written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade. The article......middle of paper......they feel more superior and think they can get away with rape. When sanctions are more severe and people are held up as examples, fraternities and college sports will become safer environments. Even colleges that attempt to hide crime should be penalized not by our justice system but by the media, so that the world can be better informed about the college they will go to or send their children to. Society should ban the word rape culture altogether, we should not confuse what a real culture is and confuse it with an inhumane crime.
