The French Revolution represents a historical period that brought great change not only to Europe but to the entire world. The French Revolution lasted from 1789 to 1799 and brought about several key changes not only in the economic state of France, but also in the perception of the Christian church, particularly the Catholic church in France. Its economic and religious impact is still felt today. The French Revolution may have temporarily destroyed Christianity in France, however, it acted as a savior for the future of Christianity. Throughout history, man has looked to religion for answers. Curiosity about how we got here and why we got here has pushed people to seek answers to these somewhat unanswerable questions. Over the last thousands of years, several religions have established themselves, some more important than others. Many of them share the similar story of a divine creator who has always existed and always will exist. In the case of Christianity, true or not, it has proven beneficial to society as a whole. The Bible sets the standard for the moral compass by which humans live their lives to this day. The fundamental problem with religion, although not religion's fault, is that man has often used it as a gateway to power and pre-eminence. In the case of the Gallican church of the 18th century, the French abused their religious power, thus creating enormous inequality throughout France, which ultimately led to a rebellion against the church and the ultimate destruction of the church in France. In the 18th century, being a French citizen almost certainly also meant being Catholic. People outside the Catholic church were denied completely…half of the paper…present-day people of the time offered new ideas about society and the natural world, questioned traditional views of divine revelation, and even questioned the existence of God. While this represented a low point in the history of Christianity, it also marked the beginning of a new understanding of religion and Christianity as a whole. Without the French Revolution, our current form of worship would not exist.
