In 2011, the Rigby High School concert band was wrapping up another big concert. They were coming to a very dramatic part of the song Ave Maria, and during a pause in the melodies, a high-pitched baby cry was heard throughout the auditorium, followed by a loud cry from a parent. The rest of the concert was a disaster, with conversations and speeches heard on the recording. In fact, Rigby has never achieved a clean recording without conversations and noises during concerts. Unfortunately, people don't understand how to behave during concerts of any kind. In some concerts and performances it is okay to vocalize, but concert band is not one of them. To help explain this, the concert band will be compared to the jazz band in its origins, typology and expectations to show why this type of behavior is unacceptable. One of the main things that distinguishes jazz from concert band is their origins. The concert band originated hundreds of years ago with important composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. The ensemble originated from a string band with violins and harps, but over time evolved into the wind instruments we use now. In the past, this classical music was played in front of kings and rulers, so a royal and pristine audience was always present. Jazz, however, was created in America's Deep South by artists such as "King Oliver, a cornetist idolized by Louis Armstrong" (Ellington). Oliver played on steamboats as entertainment for the evening as his popularity spread incredibly quickly. Many of the passengers on these boats were black workers going to and from their jobs. They often sang, danced and simply enjoyed the music. It wasn't made to be listened to like a full band was; was created to be... mid-card......season, singing is actually encouraged, especially when the band isn't playing in a formal setting. The point is that people need to respect musicians who have spent weeks practicing. If a traveler goes to a foreign country, he is expected to learn the culture so as not to offend anyone. So, using this knowledge of the origin, type, and expectations of jazz concerts and bands, it is critical that listeners learn the "culture" of fine arts in order to behave properly. And if they don't, Rigby High School will never get that clean record that is so essential for auditions and pageant and pageant opportunities around the world. Works Cited Ellington, Duke.
