Not only is our patient population changing, but so is our workforce, from nurses to clinical support staff. As the face of America changes , our nursing practice must change to meet our needs population These communities bring with them different beliefs regarding health, medicine and religious practices (Jeffreys, 2008) Not paying attention to these differences and providing incongruent nursing care negatively affects outcomes. and patient safety. ANA, 2015) “competent nursing practice in all settings for all health care users and promote continuing professional development that improves the quality of nursing practice”. (P.49) Standards are established to direct, guide and advance nursing practice. It is the how and why of what we do and what we are measured. (ANA 2015) Standards of practice for culturally congruent nursing influence our character because once we become aware of our beliefs, values, and cultural heritage, we become better equipped to show empathy, respect, and fairness when interacting with groups, individuals or different cultures (ANA 2015). In 2004, in New Haven, Connecticut, a large population... in the center of the paper... and prepares to deal with different cultural populations. This will influence my nursing practice because it will make me apply what I have learned about patients' beliefs and cultural diversity and how these relate to their health and illness (AACN, 2008). This academic program will give me the ability to integrate cultural sensitivity during the process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. It will also help me with research analysis and data collection and the ability to apply the best evidence to provide the best culturally competent care. The curriculum will also teach me leadership skills that will help me advocate for diverse and vulnerable populations so that everyone can receive culturally congruent care to have the best possible patient experience and the best possible outcome.
