“Successful Athletes Get Paid. They get free college tuition.”(Posnanski). College athletes not only receive tuition, but they receive room, board and meals. They can also be trained by the best coaches, get the best training facilities, travel around the country for free, be treated by the best doctors and medicines, and get their chance in the spotlight (Posnanski). With colleges constantly raising tuition prices, having free tuition is a great thing, but most, if not all, athletes waste it focusing only on their sport. The athletes themselves are probably not the only ones to blame. Practices should be shortened to give students time to study more and actually get a college education. While you hear many athletes complain about not having money for personal expenses, other college students may say the same thing. While athletes train, others work to pay for college tuition, which athletes get for free. In an interview at the NCAA trial Ed O'Bannon, a former UCLA basketball player, said: “I was a student athlete masquerading as a student. I was there exclusively to play basketball. I basically did the minimum to make sure I maintained my academic eligibility so I could continue playing. (Dahlberg). People should go to college for what it is intended for: education, not sports. College sports are an extracurricular activity that should be played solely for the enjoyment of fans and players, and education should always come first. There should be no academic cheating and educational standards for sports. Colleges have become too focused on sports and winning against rival schools. Education should always be the top priority of any asset
