Topic > 2005 Documentary: The Education of Shelby Knox - 684

The reason why teen pregnancy and STD rates are very high is because these teenagers are not fully educated both physically and emotionally. In the article, “Teaching Teens About Sexual Pleasure” he discusses how “sex educators really need to start discussions from the more holistic perspective that sexuality is more than sex and that sex is more than sexual intercourse” (p. 13), which is not the case. in Lubbock Public Schools. In the film, when students approach teachers about sex, who will guide them through high school, they dismiss the students' curiosity and tell them that abstinence is the way to go. This gives Shelby more incentive to create a better sex education program because the teachers who live in that community also have strong Christian backgrounds and are taught the same way. If Lubbock had a better program then, it could teach its students and faculty that sex is not an act but a behavior with a lot of gray areas. Lubbock must “learn to make a critical distinction between feelings and behavior. Sexual thoughts and feelings are not harmful. Sexual behavior is what we need to worry about” (p. 13). All teenagers wonder and become curious about life's possibilities, and sex is a part of that. The sex education system in Lubbock does not take into account this learning process and students are forced to find and behave in their own way
