Topic > What makes a sport a sport? - 670

Sports are played all over the world and reflect the cultural outlook of that particular area. This led to a wide variety of sports being played. Due to this high level of diversity it has become extremely difficult to define which activities are considered a sport versus an acting activity. Specialists in this field often debate this issue, discussing the criteria that should exist when evaluating a sport. The main objective is to create a list that is sufficiently concise but at the same time detailed so that it can be used in every sports model. Scholars have identified six distinct components that must be present within a sport to be considered a true sport. One of the first requirements on this list is that the sport must include some level of competition. This is especially important because competition is believed to be the primary force that motivates the athlete to reach their optimal levels. The second aspect that a sport must contain is the maintenance of a certain level of strategy or possibility. This essentially means that the sport must be played to determine the winner or outcome. Another important aspect that must exist within a sport is a governing body. A governing body is always present at a high level of competition in order to enforce the rules and regulations. Another important characteristic that a sport should possess is that it must require some form of physical and mental activity. These components incorporate speed, coordination and timing into a sports performance. All of these movements also require skill, which is another necessity that a sport must have. Finally, the final aspect that a sport must have is that it must benefit someone. This can be a personal medium, extrinsic or even for entertainment. In class we were given...half a sheet...waiting. Unlike fishing which requires skill in pulling the line and dancing the bait, this athlete has little skill in catching fish. While chance plays an important role in determining a true sport, I believe this activity depends too much on chance and requires too little human involvement to be successful. This led me to also classify this sport as a recreational activity. Both of these activities are considered sports for a few select individuals but, having a subjective view from the outside, it is very difficult to classify these activities as sports. Both of these activities require a high level of animal involvement and therefore require little human participation or even skill. By allowing the animals to become the main focal point of the activity, participants eventually distanced themselves from the sport.
