The most striking thing about these riots was that blacks were not the ones rioting or retaliating: they were cooperative and trying to protect their families, respect their employers, and maintain a civil attitude towards others. However, the white community was not as friendly. The damage caused by their immature and ridiculous outburst has cost many families their livelihoods. Fear is one of the strongest emotions and, if left uncontrolled, can affect more than one person. This historic event was just a clear demonstration of why everyone needs to step out of their comfort zones and explore other communities and cultures. Education and love are the key to solving the racial problems that America still faces today. Stereotypes and prejudices cause division, and division hinders growth. The white community of Atlanta chose fear over logic, this fact will forever be marked in their history. I believe this book is widely shared and supports the teachings of the textbook. By going into more detail and more specific cases, the examples were placed in a broader perspective and context. The power of yellow journalism that we talked about in class was extremely evident in this reading. When the journalist criticized and invented these stories, they reach far beyond their immediate community and have influenced the minds of Americans throughout the United States.
