Do you watch the news regularly? A simple question that, if asked just twenty years ago, would result in a general consensus of “Yes, I watch the news regularly.” Interestingly, fewer people tune in to the news, if at all. Why is this? The main reason people list for not wanting to watch the news is that it is depressing or that their undying devotion to one medium prevents them from even attempting to tune into another news station (but we won't delve further into that). topic at the moment). time). The media has certainly taken a darker turn as of late, but the same can be said of people and their interests. Media aspects have only one goal and that is to reach their target market, plain and simple, and culminate in broadcasting high profile and violent cases more often than not. The masses have caused this shift in television coverage, from executives in their offices above, to ordinary people perched in front of the television. People are violent, simply because we love stranger violence. Think about how often we put ourselves in danger by watching a car crash while driving, the allure of the crash is so tempting that we would even risk our well-being to catch a glimpse of it. When we don't deal with our individual safety, we become more selfish. Few Americans are afraid of unmanned drone attacks that harm innocent children in war-torn countries, yet when an act of violence occurs in an unexpected place it becomes a morbid reality. We see this in the very recent death of Paul Walker, minutes after the tragic news emerged, people posted sarcastic comments about his need for speed and the irony present with him peris... middle of paper... ranging from theft of a stillborn's urn as 10 Haitians died after their boat capsized. On the front page is the high-profile news we so crave, yet we are appalled by the lack of lighthearted news. To find a heartwarming story I had to scroll to the bottom of the webpage, where the link said "Marine Saves Stadium Jumper." Even lighthearted stories have a depressing undertone and unfortunately this trend will most likely continue to spiral. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable” (John F. Kennedy). applies to the media today. Until we the people are vocal in our insatiable thirst for news that isn't always negative, but is educational and inspiring, nothing will change.
