Who would have thought, just a few years ago, that we would eventually declare war on Great Britain? Well, we did. Everyone has been talking about this possibility for so long that it wasn't a huge surprise at the time, but now it's starting to come together. In hindsight I think Britain should have seen this coming, but who knows. It was a pretty bold move on the part of the colonies. Some people, even patriots, think he was a little too bold. After all, we are just a bunch of small colonies that have only been around for a hundred years. Great Britain is a vast empire with many soldiers, whereas we only have small militias. It seems like everyone's dad is going to join the militia. Mine left to join just a few days ago. John and Timmy begged him to let them come, but their father refused, telling them, “You're too young. Maybe in a few years, if we haven't won yet." It was terrible to see him go and not know if he would return. I miss him already, but mom says he'll be fine. I'm not sure whether to believe her or not. We have a lot more work to do at home now that dad is gone. I don't think kids will stay in school much longer. We need it more here. I personally dropped out of school several years ago. Some of the older kids from nearby farms are joining. I think if you want to fight you have to be at least fourteen, but my friend Tommy told me you could join at seven if you were a drummer. John and Timmy are seven and six, so it's best if you don't tell them. Charlie, William and Tommy all join in. Their fathers allow them to do so, as they are all at least sixteen years old. I hope they come home again. “You never know what might happen in a war,” Mom says. I believe her. We live in the country, with... middle of paper... the nearby town was paved over and feathered by a group of patriots. I hope you don't try to do something like that. I hope this war doesn't last long and we win it. I want Dad and all the other boys to be able to come home safe and victorious. Mom is calling me to help her start dinner. It shouldn't take so long now that Daddy is gone and one less mouth to feed. I have to go now. Works Cited Hart, Diane, Bert Bower, and Jim Lobdell. History is alive!:.
