A very old man with enormous wings is said to have created the genre of magical realism. The genre is defined by Merriam Webster's Dictionary as "a literary genre or style associated primarily with Latin America that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction, also called magical realism." The ability to have quirky happenings, characteristics and events, adding interest to stories without going into explanation, is strangely fun. The plot develops normally and realistically with few exceptions; the Old Man's wings, the spider woman, and the neighbor's suggestion of stoning the Old Man are spoken so matter-of-factly that you can't help but accept them as a true and honest part of the story. There isn't much time spent explaining or justifying, but there really isn't a need for it as it doesn't broaden the character development or increase the reader's acceptance of the character. I know a man can't grow wings, but in this genre he does and adds depth while still maintaining the story
