Cases involving patients who are near death and are experiencing excruciating amounts of pain. Unlike the claims presented in Camosy's article, euthanasia is not a tool used by doctors to relieve loved ones of the burden of caring for a terminally ill patient. According to Phillip Nitschke, euthanasia is an excellent option, it brings peace to patients when the hope of getting better has long disappeared and the long road of pain has just begun. In his article titled Hope You Never Need It, But Be Glad There's an Option, he states: "A peaceful death is everyone's right, and unless modern medicine has a cure for many of the terminal diseases that afflict individuals, the current situation is that they will continue to suffer” (Nitschke). He also believes that euthanasia is a much better alternative to rotting slowly and in pain. He states: “The process that the body of the terminally ill person goes through during the his last days is something that no human being should endure" (Nitschke). According to journalist Erwin Chemerinsky, euthanasia is not only an excellent option, but it is a patient's right. In his article entitled Recognizing the right to die with dignity states: “The right to medically assisted suicide is a fundamental aspect of the constitutionally protected liberty of the person” (Chemerinsky). Individuals of sound mind have the right to make such a decision regarding their own lives and are the only individuals who are entitled to it allowed to make that decision. Journalist Chemerinsky also mentions the fact that euthanasia not only helps the patient, but also his family members. The patient's family can rest knowing that their loved one is not in pain every day wishing the pain would end. In his article he states: “After watching my father die slowly and painfully, I knew that euthanasia was the best treatment for the terminally ill”.
