Jean was the only child of Jean's parents Babtiste Sartre and Anne Marie Schweitzer. His father was a well-known Navy officer. His father died while he was still a child. Then he went and grew up with his grandfather. He began his studies at the École Normale Supérieure in 1924 and graduated in 1929. During his studies he obtained a doctorate in philosophy. A couple of years later he became a professor of philosophy at Le Havre in 1931. He then taught at the Lycée Pasteur in Paris from 1937 to 1939. When he finished teaching in 1939 he was drafted into the French army. In the French army he served as a meteorologist. During his service he was captured by German troops in 1940.
