Blade Runner: Final Cut, directed by Ridley Scott, is a science fiction film set in 2019 Los Angeles. Scott envisions a dark future for humanity while exploring themes such as identity and mortality, along with other issues that concern humanity as a whole. The film centers on Deckard, a retired cop called back into action. The Tyrell Corporation has succeeded in genetically engineering androids, known as replicants, for work in extraterrestrial colonies. These replicants are identical in appearance to humans but are superior in strength and have other superhuman qualities. Replicants have a lifespan of only four years as they begin to develop emotions of their own. Deckard's mission is to track down four replicants who have returned to earth. Throughout Deckard's mission, the director uses various cinematic techniques to enhance these themes, while suggesting some of his own predictions about where humanity is headed. In Blade Runner light is constantly used to emphasize the theme of identity. The theme of mortality and the questions surrounding it are enhanced through the use of movement, screen placement and use of light. The editing technique is also used to suggest the character's true self. Scott also establishes a dark prediction of humanity's future by sharing some of his ideologies with the audience through the use of symbols and special effects. In the first chapter of Understanding Films, Giannetti discusses the different types of lighting styles and how each “is oriented to the theme and mood of a film, as well as its genre (p.19).” Giannetti states, “In general, artists have used darkness to suggest fear, evil, and the unknown. Light usually suggests safety, virtue, truth, joy (p.21).” The lack of...... middle of paper......l buildings.
