Topic > VoiceXML Technology: Benefits and Limitations - 1132

VoiceXML is the W3C standard XML format for creating interactive voice applications that can be accessed via telephone. It could be described as a markup language used to write interactive dialogues between humans and computers. It's like HTML, the only difference is that while HTML uses a graphical user interface to access information, VoiceXML uses an audio interface where speech and keyboard tones replace the screen, keyboard and mouse (Hampton, 2001, para.1). The basic elements for interaction are speech and two-tone multi-frequency signaling (DTMF) with telephone keypads. The computer uses spoken instructions to evoke responses from the user in a sequential and linear manner, and the user is required to respond using a finite set of vocabularies in each dialogue. Despite the potential and capabilities of interactive voice applications, the technology is far from reaching its potential. The reason for this problem is that they are prone to errors due to the lack of tools and methodologies for building practical and adequate frameworks. In the past, voice application development was an expensive, high-level and complex technology built with ad hoc infrastructure to meet essential business needs, so people still find it very complex (Turunen, 2004). VoiceXML provides methods that make interactive voice applications quite easy to create. It offers the opportunity to develop cost-effective, flexible, portable and easy-to-use voice applications. Its significance is that it reaches a much larger audience than the privileged population who have regular access to computers. The main advantages of VoiceXML mentioned, in order of regularity, are its simplified web access...... middle of paper... ...Creating a VoiceXML application with Perl.
