According to www.how-to-stop-bullying.com, seventy-seven percent of students are victims of bullying. The definition of bullying has recently changed (how-to-stop-bullying.com). The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the verb “bully” as “to treat abusively” (Merriam-Webster). There is more than one way to abuse someone. So a full definition, which comes from www.bullyingstatistics.org, is any type of verbal, social, physical abuse and cyberbullying that occurs (Naas). Bullying is seen everywhere. It is talked about in films, in the media, in songs and in school curricula. What drives bullies or aggressors to do what they want? How does bullying affect everyone? Let's start with why bullies bully. Ian Rivers, of Brunel University in the UK, conducted an experiment to find out why bullies harass others. The study did something that had never been done before. He openly asked teenagers why they bullied others. Most of the guys said it made them feel good, so they kept doing it. Rivers also explained that the differences between the bully and the victim become the motivations for the bully. Things like sexual orientation, grades, sports performance, and possessions are huge motivators (Rettner). When bullies bully victims, they make it seem like it is the victim's fault. As if the victim deserves to be humiliated and made fun of. The bully does this to protect his own conscience and further tear down the victim. This allows the bully to believe they are right and justify their feelings. This justification is not given by an adult, but by every adult.
