Cuban Missile Crisis: on the Verge of Global Nuclear WarThe Cuban Missile Crisis had a huge impact on society even years after its resolution because the incident had brought the our nation and the world so close to the brink of nuclear war. Before the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, many other factors had accumulated and created unwanted tensions between many countries. Along the way, new allies and enemies were created, causing further stress to the Cold War. The new ties that formed after Cuba was taken by Fidel Castro pushed nuclear war to the limit. Many changes in Cuba caused increased tensions between the United States, Cuba and Russia. Before the Bay of Pigs Incident, Cuba had a corrupt dictator who ruled the people without giving them much freedom. President Fulgencio Batista was an ally of the United States because American companies based in Cuba did not have many restrictions. Many wealthy Americans owned plantations on the island of Cuba due to the lack of restrictions. Everything changed in 1959 when Fidel Castro took over. Castro wanted to limit American influence and cut ties with the United States. Castro quickly attempted to ally himself with the Soviets. Because of Castro's attempt to woo the Soviets, the United States blocked the import of sugar from Cuba. The Cuban economy would have suffered terribly if they had failed to find a buyer. The Soviets agreed to buy all the sugar. The United States subsequently severed all relations with Cuba. The United States and Cuba were no longer allies even though they were separated by only 100 miles.
