Large waves crash against the shore as people run for higher ground. But many are amazed. What was really happening was a tsunami. An earthquake had just occurred in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Soon the waves became bigger and bigger before sweeping away the entire village. Tsunamis are large waves that reach 300 feet in height and sweep away villages, cities, homes and businesses. Many tsunamis leave the area flooded, destroyed, and full of marine animals such as whales, dolphins, sharks, and other animals. Then, the tsunami pulls back dragging all the debris it destroyed into the ocean polluting the entire marine environment. Tsunamis not only cause short-term effects, but also cause long-term effects: the tsunami in Japan destroyed a nuclear power plant, releasing thousands of liters of contamination into the Pacific Ocean, killing marine life and contaminating nature.
