“Winning” by Jack Welch is a great book to increase everyone's knowledge. Jack Welch believes that business is a game and that the ultimate goal is to become the winner. “Winning” has four main sections. The first section outlines the basics of Welch's business philosophy: the need for clear and tangible goals and values, extreme sincerity in the work environment, strong differentiation among employees, and ways to involve every employee in the game. The next three sections cover victories within the company, against the competition, and throughout your career. While such principles are not new, they could hardly be omitted, as they are the key to success in any organization and can be applied to my future career in healthcare as an occupational therapist. All successful organizations must have a mission. What is a mission? According to Jack Welch, a mission is how an organization intends to win in its business. Values are the behaviors you intend to adopt to achieve your mission. A mission statement is more about the top line than the bottom line. It is a company's expression to its customers, employees and the world of the purpose of its existence. To have an impact, an organization must have people who reflect its mission and values. Healthcare fields such as occupational therapy must employ individuals with the goal of helping clients have independent, productive, and fulfilling lives. In other words, when the daily crisis of life approaches, you need to have people who are faithful to the company's mission and values, rather than disconnecting. To move forward, you need big ideas. As an occupational therapist you have to be creative. To get the best… middle of the paper… how to be successful is related to occupational therapy because underneath it all I will apply what I have learned in this book in my career striving to achieve. I have gathered a better vision on how to be a better artist, a better leader, how to expand my work horizon and maintain a positive attitude. Occupational therapy is a career that is sure to make a great contribution to society and bring tremendous self-realization. A quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson expresses it perfectly: “To know that even a single life has breathed easier because you have lived; that means having been successful.”Works CitedBureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 edition, Occupational Therapists, on the Internet at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos078 .htm (accessed 20 March 2012).
