The irony of the necklace is that Mme Losueil put so much time and effort into being extravagant and looking good and it was for nothing because she lost the necklace she had gifted to her friend and she had to work even harder to replace the Necklace. The proof and evidence that proves this is that they had no choice but to let their maid go because they could no longer afford to pay her due to the debts incurred to replace the Necklace. The irony is that Mrs. Loisel and her husband were wealthy all their lives, and because at the end of the story they had to pay off debts, they became poor and experienced the hardships of the common man. Another irony of the Necklace is that throughout the story Mrs. Loisel thought she owed the rich woman money, but it turned out that the Necklace was only worth five hundred dollars. This story shows that there is a disconnection between different social classes because the poor, unlike Mrs. Loisel, do not care about how extravagant they seem but instead care about buying clothes and basic food for their children and the disconnection is that the Madame Loisel is worried and obsessed by her extravagant appearance.
