Ted Kooser's poem “Student” highlights what the life of a student is truly like. As we discussed in class our insights into the poem “Student” by Ted Kooser, Omar Mejia mentioned how he found a comparison to a turtle in the poem. I imagined a baby turtle and its journey when it is born and runs trying to reach the sea. I imagine the life of a turtle, which begins in the sand and then begins its journey towards the future. Somehow I agree with this idea. While I imagined the complicated and tough life a sea turtle must have, I also remember how the life of a student could be just as tough and complicated. Sometimes a student's life can be complicated, busy, unclear, stressful, happy, sad, depressing, demanding and joyful and so on. The life of a student is a life full of responsibility Kooser first mentions a student's best friend “The green shell of his backpack”(Line 1). A backpack that will accompany the student during most of the study time in which the student will carry books, notes and perhaps a computer. For me, I have a backpack most of the time at school, from the classroom to the dining room, from the chapel to the spiritual direction meeting or even the training meeting. The backpack is also the student's "green shell"(1). This shell perhaps makes a student feel safe because on it there is material for lessons, assignments to present and on it it is somehow part of the student's future. From personal experience I am more confident when I carry a backpack because I know that what I need for lessons is there, and even when I don't have a backpack I feel out of place at school. Then Kooser mentions "wave after wave of responsibility"(2) the many responsibilities... in the center of the paper..."With hope, in the library"(9) is a good motivation for the student because with hope he student began his journey. It may remind you why the student decides to take the trip. The library is an ever-present tool to help the student meet his or her needs on his or her journey to the future. In my journey I think that without hope I can't be where I am now, and difficult times will make me fall apart. I am sure that the library is a tool that I can always use in my duties as a student. There are many characteristics of a student and without a doubt being a student is a tough journey, full of ups and downs, delights and worries. It is the beginning of the future; the future that one day will reveal the fruit of years of work and effort as a student. Where at the end of the student journey the future awaits.
