What are you afraid of? Many people are afraid of many things such as death, heights, insects or public speaking; but fear of change is at the top of the list of things that trigger anxiety (Radwan). Is there a reasonable answer to why people neglect change nowadays? In fact, there is more than one answer to this question. Change has become such an important aspect of our daily lives that it is impossible to ignore. When it comes to the idea of change, most people will readily agree that some individuals do their best to avoid change. The reason behind this well-known theory is that these individuals do not fear change; they fear being changed (Rabadam). Ultimately, change is something that takes them away from wanting to experience other things beyond what that individual is comfortable with. To fully examine this issue, an individual must carefully analyze the meaning of the change. Change indicates the act or instance of creating or becoming different. Change is something that pushes us out of our comfort zone (Webb). People fear change because of the “unknown”. This means exactly that people fear their own abilities to deal with whatever comes next. Fear of change and fear of the unknown are related because they both mean moving into unknown territory. When people feel comfortable in a certain situation, they tend to shy away from other situations. Consequently, this creates distinctive psychological reasons why individuals begin to avoid change. Next, one of the reasons people fear change is that they fear failure. This is the most common reason.
